Dr. Jillian Holtzmann is one of the most fantastic characters to grace the cinematic screen in years. A symbol for women, a symbol for women in science in engineering, a symbol for those gay women out there that have long sought-out a presence like hers - she hits each and every need in perfection. Eccentric but lovable, crazy but loyal, and best of all - completely herself through and through - Holtzmann has been the breakout star of the new Ghostbusters movie, and has jumped onto many people's radar as a character to show their love, as well as a jumping-off point for the woman that brought her to life - Kate McKinnon.

Here you will find my dedication and appreciation video to Holtzmann and Kate, as I can't get enough of either of them. I am already planning out my Holtzmann cosplay costume (hopefully it will be completely ready for Halloween), and I'm finding every single one of my friends who haven't yet seen the movie and dragging them to the theater - mainly so I can just see this character's awesomeness in action once again.

Long Live Holtzmann.  And God Bless Kate McKinnon!

Sharing is Caring - Movies: "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"

I really wasn't expecting this movie to get amazing reviews once it had been released.  But it was still great, just for the mere fact of the storyline and how it went on adventures with Walter in his mind.

This seems to be one of those heartfelt, feel-good movies that come along once in a while - and though some don't turn out to be very catching to reviewers, that doesn't mean it can't be a movie that could be lovable and endearing - I mean, take a look at "Hocus Pocus"!  It's a classic, a well-loved film by ALL ages, and a pop culture phenomenon - yet the reviews were HORRIBLE when it came out.  I mean, Rotten Tomatoes, the leading place to catch all the reviews of any movie from all time, gave "Hocus Pocus" a 30% (technically meaning it was trash)!  Yet, it lives on to be one of my favorite movies of all-time.

So, though this new adaptation of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" didn't get those very solid good reviews, I still recommend seeing it.

I mean, who wouldn't want to see it after watching this trailer?

BRIDEGROOM

The highly-anticipated documentary about the young gay couple living life together in love, and having it suddenly disappear, is finally making it's way to the public.

It's That Time of Year Again...Halloween Season!

It's that time of year again - Halloween is fast approaching!!

October 1st starts off my favorite time of year.  I love Fall weather, and I love how the colder seasons open up with the Halloween celebration.  Also, October holds a lot of dates close and dear to me - my birthday, for one, is on October 30th, and after this year, my wedding anniversary will be on October 26th.  It will be a fun-filled week at the end of October every year for me!

I also love November and December as well, so October is spent anticipating those months.  I love that November slowly eases us into Winter, my favorite season.  And I love the month of December because of the holiday cheer that everyone seems to get in the mood about.  However, I don't like how commercialized it's become, and I try to stay away from that part of the holiday season, including avoiding Black Friday like the plague.  Personally, I love the hot cups of cider next to a fire while talking with family, or cozing up with a cuddly blanket, a cup of hot cocoa, and a book next to a window with it snowing outside.  THAT'S what I love about the holiday season.

But as for October, November, and December - I also love all of the movies that are made for these seasons.

We start with Halloween.  I watch many of the traditional movies - "The Nightmare Before Christmas", "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!", and "Halloweentown".  But my favorites are as follows:

Hocus Pocus

The story of the resurrection of the Sanderson Sisters in the 20th Century.  A true Disney classic.  I absolutely ADORE this movie and have loved it since the day it came out back in 1993,  Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimi are the trademark witches in my eye, and I can't help but laugh and have a good time every Halloween that I watch it.  Now that I live on the other side of the country from my parents, I actually arrange with my mother to start it at the same time every Halloween night - me at 9pm, her at 6pm (to accommodate the time difference), so she and I are still able to watch it together :).


ParaNorman

ParaNorman is a new one for me, having only come out in September of last year (2012).  But this movie is fantastic, and has become a part of my movie tradition list to watch during the Halloween season.  I saw it in theaters with my mom and my fiancee when my mom was visiting me last year, and we were all HOWLING with laughter!  It is touching, charming, extremely funny, and even has a great moment in praise for the LGBT community!  Not to mention, the scene where I almost peed my pants in laughter was well worth every second.  If you haven't seen this yet, I highly recommend it.  You will not be disappointed!

Sharing is Caring - Movies: Gravity (2013)

Over this past weekend, I got REALLY excited.  FINALLY - the one movie I have been waiting for almost the whole year, had come to the big screen.

G R A V I T Y

I first saw the 30-second teaser trailer for this movie months and months ago, and immediately knew it would be a movie I wanted to see.  I was only anxious as to what reviewers were going to say about the movie, and whether or not their views would sway my decision to actually go and see the movie in theaters instead of just waiting for it to come out on Blu-Ray.

3 weeks ago, the reviews started to come in on the movie, and they were AMAZING...

This just made the whole experience that much more anticipated for me.  The day was getting nearer, and the reviews just kept getting better.  Finally, last Friday, all the reviews came out, and the website Rotten Tomatoes, which specializes in combining all reviews for a movie and giving it an "average" percentile, gave the movie "Gravity" a whopping 98%.  This was gonna be GOOD.

And it was..

The movie was intense, electrifying, and worth every second of it's 1 hour and 31 minute run.

I saw it in IMAX 3D, and it was visually stunning.  The cinematography and complete immersion into the story was unlike any other I have ever experienced.

Sandra Bullock was incredible - this was by far one of the best movies I have ever seen her in, if not the best work she's ever shown off to the public.

I was on the edge of my seat for almost every single moment.  There was never a down time, yet you never felt as if you were being rushed or exhausted in sticking with the movie and the characters.

The human interaction and reflection on the human condition was intense.  It made you question your own view of life and how to live, yet wasn't depressing despite the horrific situation the characters found themselves in.

Basically, I was in awe.  The movie was fantastic, and I absorbed every minute of it like an eager sponge.  I went with a good friend on Saturday to see it, and I've already convinced my fiancee to see it with me tomorrow, so that means I'll be seeing it once more.

...and I'm super excited.

If you have the means to, go see it, it is well worth every penny.

Disney Releases The First Look at "Into the Woods" with Meryl Streep

The first image has arrived online from Disney's adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's stage musical Into The Woods, featuring a bedraggled-looking Meryl Streep as The Witch.

The film will retell a series of classic fairy tales, all interwoven with the primary narrative of a simple baker and his wife attempting to shake off a witch's curse and start a family.

Streep is said sorceress, and from the look of this first image, a very fearsome one she will make too…

Streep is just one part of an all-star cast, with Johnny Depp appearing as The Wolf, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Prince Charming and James Corden and Emily Blunt as the baker and his wife.

Directed by Rob Marshall and co-starring Frances de la Tour, Lucy Punch and Tracey Ullman, Into The Woods will open in the US on Christmas Day 2014, with a UK date to be confirmed.

Sharing is Caring - Movies: "50/50" (2011)

Easily one of my top 3 favorite movies of all-time, "50/50" tells the story of one man's journey through cancer, and the trials and tribulations along the way.  One of the only movies I have yet to experience that has made me laugh out loud from it's comedy, as well as cry tears upon tears from it's sadness, "50/50" is one of the most delightful films that have yet graced our cinemas.

"Written by Will Reiser who based the film on his own experiences fighting cancer, Jonathan Levine's poignant comedy 50/50 stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Adam, a 27-year old public radio employee who discovers he has cancer. As his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) tries to help out, his girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) proves to be a less than ideal life partner for this particular crisis. All the while, Adam's overprotective mother Diane (Anjelica Huston) tries to overcome her son's continued attempts to keep her out of his life. As Adam begins to discover how hard it is to deal with his situation, and to maintain various relationships in his life, he begins seeing a young counselor (Anna Kendrick) who might prove to be just as helpful personally as she is professionally. Matt Frewer and Philip Baker Hall co-star as Adam's fellow chemotherapy patients."

Starring one of my favorite actors, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this movie also has an all-star cast that were chosen perfectly for their roles.

In addition, this movie has one of the most powerful and moving scenes, as I'm showing below.  It is in two parts, the first part on top, the second part on the bottom.  Watch them together to get the full effect of the scene.  In this scene, Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is going home from a bar with his friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) the night before he has a life-threatening surgery to remove his tumor.  Being an unlicensed driver that has never driven a vehicle before, Adam tells Kyle that he wants to "drive". After a horrific panic attack in the car, he decides to call his therapist...

I love this movie, as it portrays so many lessons in life we all must learn and go through, and how to handle things when the road gets rough.  But the best message of the movie is that you don't need to give up.  This movie portrays an average Joe that has every possibility to give up, and even does in his own way, but realizes that he doesn't have to, that things can get better, and it would be worthwhile to work hard for the life you have.

Sharing is Caring - Movies: "Little Women" (1994)

One of my absolute favorite movies of all time, "Little Women" is the portrayal of one of the greatest novels written.  When it came out in 1994 I was still too young to understand it's brilliance, but it has since grown into one of my top 3 favorite movies.  I watch it every Christmas with my family, and sometimes find myself needing to watch it again during the rest of the year as I can't hold myself back from waiting until next Christmas to watch it once more.

Here is the synopsis:
"Louisa May Alcott's classic novel about a family of women in Civil War-era New England is again brought to the screen in this adaptation. The focus is on the March sisters, four young girls raised by their mother (Susan Sarandon) after their father leaves for battle as part of the Union Army. At the center is Jo March (Winona Ryder), an idiosyncratic would-be writer said to be based on Alcott herself, but the film also focuses on the stories of her sisters -- the more conventional Meg (Trini Alvarado), the innocent Beth (Claire Danes), and the precocious Amy (Kirsten Dunst and Samantha Mathis, who represent Amy at different ages.) The film spans years, following the girls' struggles with life's challenges and illustrating how their family connection remains strong in the face of tragedies large and small. Australian director Gillian Armstrong emphasizes the story's feminist elements, particularly in Jo's journey to independence."

Sharing is Caring - Movies: "WALL·E" from Disney/Pixar

One of the most amazing movies I have ever seen was "Wall-E" by Disney/Pixar.  Many, many of Pixar movies are wonderful, creative, original, and perfect in their own ways, including (but not limited to) Finding Nemo, Up, The Incredibles, and Toy Story.  But my favorite, by far, is Wall-E.

"In a distant, but not so unrealistic, future where mankind has abandoned earth because it has become covered with trash from products sold by the powerful multi-national Buy N Large corporation, WALL-E, a garbage collecting robot has been left to clean up the mess. Mesmerized with trinkets of Earth's history and show tunes, WALL-E is alone on Earth except for a sprightly pet cockroach. One day, EVE, a sleek (and dangerous) reconnaissance robot, is sent to Earth to find proof that life is once again sustainable. WALL-E falls in love with EVE. WALL-E rescues EVE from a dust storm and shows her a living plant he found amongst the rubble. Consistent with her "directive", EVE takes the plant and automatically enters a deactivated state except for a blinking green beacon. WALL-E, doesn't understand what has happened to his new friend, but, true to his love, he protects her from wind, rain, and lightning, even as she is unresponsive. One day a massive ship comes to reclaim EVE, but WALL-E, out of love or loneliness, hitches a ride on the outside of the ship to rescue EVE. The ship arrives back at a large space cruise ship, which is carrying all of the humans who evacuated Earth 700 years earlier. The people of Earth ride around this space resort on hovering chairs which give them a constant feed of TV and video chatting. They drink all of their meals through a straw out of laziness and/or bone loss, and are all so fat that they can barely move. When the auto-pilot computer, acting on hastily-given instructions sent many centuries before, tries to prevent the people of Earth from returning by stealing the plant, WALL-E, EVE, the portly captain, and a band of broken robots stage a mutiny."

Wall-E's curiosity and wonder is monumental, and is constantly captured throughout the film.

His determination exceeds that of many humans both in the movie, and in the world today as well.

The love story between these two robots (inanimate objects, mind you) is one of the most cherished love stories ever told.  These two have chemistry on screen that rivals that of the most romantic movies.  And hey, even this is a better love story than "Twilight."

And then of course, Wall-E's humor can not be beat.

Fun, entertaining, heartwarming, and great for the whole family, Wall-E is - to this day - one of my favorite movies of all-time, and I hope that he can bring enjoyment to your movie night sometime as well!
