Dr. Jillian Holtzmann is one of the most fantastic characters to grace the cinematic screen in years. A symbol for women, a symbol for women in science in engineering, a symbol for those gay women out there that have long sought-out a presence like hers - she hits each and every need in perfection. Eccentric but lovable, crazy but loyal, and best of all - completely herself through and through - Holtzmann has been the breakout star of the new Ghostbusters movie, and has jumped onto many people's radar as a character to show their love, as well as a jumping-off point for the woman that brought her to life - Kate McKinnon.

Here you will find my dedication and appreciation video to Holtzmann and Kate, as I can't get enough of either of them. I am already planning out my Holtzmann cosplay costume (hopefully it will be completely ready for Halloween), and I'm finding every single one of my friends who haven't yet seen the movie and dragging them to the theater - mainly so I can just see this character's awesomeness in action once again.

So...I Built My Own Computer

Over President's Day Weekend, I built my first computer desktop in over 15 years, and boy have things changed! I took extra care to make sure I handled each piece with delicacy and made sure to have my anti-static wristband and anti-static mat available every step of the way.  If you EVER attempt to do this on your own, make sure to have TONS of detailed instructions with you, and the anti-static wristband and mat.  DO NOT overstep these as they could be the saving grace to every component in your computer.  If you try to do the build without these things, you run a VERY high risk of damaging the parts before they are even seated in your brand new computer!

Here are the parts I put in to my desktop and the total cost in the end:

I built this system for a few reasons.

1. I used to be a strictly desktop person only back in my youth and high school days. Then I purchased a laptop when I went to college, keeping my desktop around until it decided to break down. Four years later, that first laptop broke down as well, so I went ahead and invested $1100 in a more customized HP laptop, leaving my desk empty of any desktop whatsoever. Now, 5 years later, that laptop is finally starting to fail on me, despite a complete refresh of its system and dumping all erroneous junk as much as possible. Thinking about the fact that I own a Chromebook, an older Dell laptop from a past job, a new Dell laptop for work, as well as my partner having her own laptop at home - I figured it was time to delve back in to desktops.
2. You can't customize anything anymore from Dell, HP, or even Alienware! So I just decided to bite the bullet and build my own dogonnit.
3. I didn't want to pay a bucket load for a more advanced system just because it was built by someone else and assembled. I'm pretty tech savvy and have engineering blood running through my veins, so I thought this was would be a great project to attempt, while also having a bit of fun.

The build took a long time, longer than I anticipated essentially. I expected to work on this beast for a good 6 hours or so - start to finish (finish being that I had the computer running completely). It ended up taking me 9 hours (10 hours total but I took an hour break for dinner).

I ran into a huge issue on my first attempt at startup...

The machine wouldn't turn on...!

However, the power button on my motherboard turned on, and I checked the voltage on all of the parts - they were all running fine. So it wasn't my power supply (which is usually the first culprit when a new machine won't turn on). 

At that point, I figured it was one of two things - either the graphics card wasn't inserted correctly, or my processor wasn't making appropriate contact with the motherboard through the thermal compound (a gooey, paste-like substance that assists in the processor powering the PC without overheating - can't make ANYTHING work without that gooey paste!).

I opened up the machine again and removed the CPU cooler, a big fan that helps with keeping the processor cool and stuck in its position without movement. As soon as I removed that and took a look at the processor, I noticed the problem. 

There was that gooey pastey thermal compound EVERYWHERE!! 

I removed the processor completely and took to it with my anti-static wristband, TONS of soft tissues, and a prayer or three. I wiped the processor clean of all of the thermal compound that it was basically caked in, wiped the mechanisms on the motherboard to keep the processor sturdy clean as well, and cleaned off the entire surface of the CPU cooler, also covered in compound. Once every piece was completely cleaned off, I went back to reassembling. I applied a MUCH thinner layer of thermal compound to the CPU cooler, spreading it evenly with a soft kitchen rubber spreader like you use to put frosting on cupcakes (still with my anti-static wristband on), and set everything back up. I plugged everything in to the power supply again, and made sure all of the connections were completely set and positioned properly one more time.

Upon my second attempt at powering on the system, it worked! I actually exclaimed "Hallelujah!" at the top of my lungs when it burst to life, and continued on with the initial setup and Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit installation.

The machine is beautiful and I'm quite happy with it. Once I get all of the drivers installed and am able to really stretch it's legs, I plan on putting my three favorite games Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Tomb Raider on my SSD (Solid State Drive) for fast play and load times, and seeing what this baby can handle.

With all of the components, and spending more money in the right places, I hope to have this system for a long time, and build on it as I can through the years.

The Anker® Gen Astro Mini is easily one of the most powerful portable USB chargers I have ever owned, as well as compact and easy to fit in any travel accessory - whether you keep it locked away in your laptop bag, purse, or even your back pocket, it's ease of transportation makes it one of the first items I grab when on the go. Testing with the following devices: iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Mini w/Retina, Barnes & Noble Nook HD - I discovered the following results with charging each device.

Starting with a 1% charge on the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, and iPad Mini w/Retina, the following average results came from charging these devices with the Anker® Gen Astro Mini. All were tested under NO usage (aside from keeping screen on in the first 10 minutes to track percentage increases) and NOT in airplane mode:

First 5 Percent Increase:

- 35 seconds to 2%

- 30 seconds to 3%

- 50 seconds to 4%

- 1:16 minutes to 5%

- 1:16 minutes to 6%

5 Minute Increase:

7% to 12%

Time to Complete Charge:

72:34 minutes to full charge

(unit lasted full charge time)

On average, the unit returns about 1% increase in battery life per 1 minute of charging. Reducing usage of the device while charging helped increase the charge time, as well as putting certain devices in "airplane mode" while charging.

The only con I have discovered with the Anker® Gen Astro Mini is the time it takes to charge the actual charging unit. I tested the charge time on another Anker® product (the Anker® 40W 5-Port High Speed Desktop USB Charger), on an original iPad Apple charger, and on a USB 3.0 input connected to a HP laptop computer. Via the Anker® Desktop USB Charger, the unit took close to 7 full hours to charge on the initial charge (out of the box), and then 4.5 hours after it's first full usage charging the iPhone 6 device. Via the original iPad Apple charger, the unit took close to 5 hours to fully charge. Via the USB 3.0 input connected to a HP laptop computer, the unit took just under 4 hours to fully charge. Partial charges were not tested during this testing period.

Overall, this is a quality product. The charger lasts longer than any of the other portable devices I have used and tested within the last 6 months, capable of providing a full recharge to many of my devices, especially to Apple products. Despite the slow charging time for the device itself, I highly recommend this product, another winning device from Anker®.

HyperX Cloud Gaming Headset by Kingston ($79.99 on Amazon at time of review)

For Christmas, I received the HyperX Cloud Gaming Headset from my wife for use on my Xbox One as well as my PC when I'm playing games.  This gave her the benefit of not having to hear my shoot-em-up games blasting on our 55" HDTV while she's trying to fall asleep at night or working in the next room, and it gave me the benefit of not having to deal with an unhappy wife.  Like they say, "Unhappy wife, unhappy life!"

As per my usual tendencies, I did some extensive research when looking into headsets that could work across certain platforms as well as be top quality in design, sound, and experience.  Repeatedly, I heard about this headset, especially with the price being so affordable in a market that is ruled the $150+ gaming headset.   At $80 for this headset, it is worth every penny, and makes me feel as if I'm robbing Kingston by only paying that price for it.

I actually cross-use these on both my Xbox One (via the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter) as well as my PC, and they are phenomenal. Excellent sound, easy functions, great clarity. All of the sound effects that are required to be at certain decibels and certain crescendos are heard loud and clear. The headset rests comfortably on my head without feeling heavy or bulky. I even wear glasses while playing my Xbox (for the faraway TV), and have no issue with the headset pushing my glasses arms into the side of my head, or moving them about on my face. The ear cups are super comfortable and completely encase me in my gameplay. Anyone around me has stated that they can't hear a single sound out of the headset unless there is a large and epic explosion (think end of Call of Duty) and the sound on the headset is turned up to the maximum level. Aside from that, they are super quiet for your surroundings. I highly recommend this headset for any gameplay.

A truly amazing find and so comfortable in your hand, my favorite wireless mouse has to be the Anker Flip-Tail Folding Mouse.

Absolutely incredible wireless mouse. I love having the ability to easily turn it "off" by folding it up back to it's sitting stance. The arch in the hand of the mouse also makes it feel incredibly comfortable when in use, and takes away the feeling of stress on my hand. So I'm starting off a new section today: Sharing is Caring - Technology.

I am the kind of person that constantly is looking up articles, forums, posts, slideshows, etc. on products to buy and which ones are the best to go with (if you're looking for something in particular).  I use these all the time to purchase electronics especially.  People out there really know what they're talking about and, when you hear it from the consumer's mouth (instead of the manufacturer), it makes it more believable.  Most people are going to complain about something first before they go online to praise a product, so when I see a particular item come up repeatedly in my research, I know I've found something good and worth my investment.

Well, I've decided to start highlighting certain purchases I have made and make based on these research escapades and my finding a solid product.  Today, I'm going to highlight a particular product that I have constantly been researching and actually had the misfortune of not consistently receiving quality items, despite the research I have done.  However, with today's item, I've finally found the winner.

I have not yet used any NOOT®  products prior to this, but have become a fan overnight.

I have had to face the fact that I was going to need to buy a third party USB cord manufacturer for a second Apple iPhone Lightning cable seeing as I needed one longer than the standard 3-ft one provided by Apple themselves with all of their mobile electronics purchases.  My nightstand and outlet next to my bed is rather far away, resulting in my needing the longer cable to plug my iPhone, iPad, or work iPhone in at night to charge.

After going through about 2 or 3 different third party providers in searching for a 6-ft long Lightning Cable for my iPhone, I've finally settled on NOOT and been thoroughly pleased with the product. Many of the other third party cables that I've purchased have broken, snapped, come apart, stopped working, or stop responding on my iPhone within 2-3 months of use. I have now had my NOOT cable for the longest stretch of time with a third party cable, and have never experienced a single error or issue with it thus far, making me certain that this is, by far, the best third party cable out there. I will always buy NOOT from now on for any and all of my cable accessories, and highly recommend this product for any Apple user out there.

If you're looking for a second USB cable for any of your Apple Lightning products, this is one of the best out there, especially if you're looking to avoid the Apple prices.
